What is Powder Coating and why is it useful for you

We are asked from time to time why we offer powder coating to our customer as an application and what we like about it. This is the answer:

What is Powder Coating?

The definition for powder coating from any internet search you do common refers to powder coating as the process of applying an object with polyester or epoxy powder, which is then put through a heating process in order to fuse the powder onto the object to form a protective surface. The Powder Coating Institute defines powder  coating as Powder coating is a dry finishing process that has become extremely popular since its introduction in North America over in the 1960s.  Representing over 15% of the total industrial finishing market, powder is used on a wide array of products. More and more companies specify powder coatings for a high-quality, durable finish, allowing for maximized production, improved efficiencies, and simplified environmental compliance (Source). KECO Coatings has been working more aggressively with the powder coating industry after the purchase of our facility on West 16th Street in Indianapolis which our facility primarly used for powder coating (Our other facilities also handle powder coating requests)

Some key characteristics of powder coating that separate it from other coating choices we use:

  • Environmentally Friendly- Powder coating is environmentally friendly and not hazardous in any way to the environment or the person applying it. We of course use protective equipment with any high temp coating or powder we apply but powder tends to be less hazardous on the area and people around it.
  • Less Variability– Powder coating is manufactured by the powder coating manufacturers and has all components required to spray as received reducing the color and sheen variation often found in liquid paint.
  • Performance – The robust appearance is more desirable for our customer.
  • Long term usage— The EPA continues to update standards for the amount of VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) as well as HAPS (Hazardous Air Pollutants) allowed for spraying per gallon KECO Coatings strives to use environmentally friendly coatings that meet or exceed these standards whenever applicable.

Powder Coating is actually a commonly used coating for things that you didn’t even know were powder coated! Appliances like your water heater, dishwasher racks, dryer drums are commonly powder coated as an economically smart coating choice. Automotives often have powder coated parts (like your rims) can be powder coated. Even everyday items like golf clubs, patio chairs and other items you use everyday can be powder coated.

Powder Coating provides three key components with it’s usage. One of the components is part protection. Parts coated with powder coating and provide a strong protection with some industry hubs dubbing powder coating as “an extra layer of skin.” Another component the usage of powder coating has is the obvious aesthetic value. At KECO Coatings we have a wide catalog of powder in a variety of colors and these colors fit whatever style you might want. Finally, functionality is a key aspect that powder coating provides. It can allow for your parts to perform better, more efficiently and for longer.
